Side-by-side
ICD-10-CM is maintained for US use with CDC/NCHS and distributed with CMS files. CPT is copyrighted and maintained by the AMA. You typically report both on a professional claim: diagnoses that support medical necessity, and procedures that describe the work.
- ICD-10-CM → diagnosis, laterality, episode context
- CPT → visits, surgeries, tests, and many services
- HCPCS Level II → drugs, DME, and other CMS-defined items
People also ask: can one replace the other?
No. Payers need the pair (and sometimes HCPCS) to adjudicate. A perfect CPT with an unrelated or missing diagnosis is a common denial pattern. That is why Health Coder runs diagnosis and procedure suggestion in one workflow.
Facility claims
Hospitals may report ICD-10-PCS for inpatient procedures. That is still not CPT. Do not use a CPT automation page as a PCS tutorial.
